Welcome everybody,
Please forgive me writing in English but I come from far away and cannot speak your language. I hope this is not a problem.
I've registered at this site because it seems to be connected with the topic of GPS navigation. I must say registering was fun - no idea what the confirmation email means
Anyhow, I need your help. I'm going to visit Indonesia quite soon and I'd like to take my GPS navigation with me. It will probably be very useful. However the software I'm using does not have any map of this region. I've searched a bit and it seems that the only reasonable solution is to use one of your local GPS programs. Could anyone tell me where I can one of those? Or possibly just a name so I can search for it.
Or maybe you use one of the international ones that have maps of more than one country - if so please tell me the name of the program. The only program I've found is from Garmin but I cannot find any details of the supported region...
Actually, anything will be helpful - I'm quite stuck.
I also apologize if this is not the correct category - I don't know what 'perangkat' means :P
If it's important - I will be traveling to Jakarta and later to Semarang. So I'm looking for maps of Java and possibly the neighbor islands as well.
Thank you very much for help and once again, sorry for writing in English.
Best regards,
QmQ

What i meant, i am not smart enough to look for missing dll.
For a purpose of learning, yes it could be interesting stuff.
I don't have a WinCE device at a moment, that is why an emulator needed supposely.
At this time i would like to say poisonous (mungkin bisa bikin ketagihan) rather than dangerous...right m8.
Are we hijacking a thread, mbon?

Not quite - busy days at the moment so I have no time to play. That's also why I stopped responding so promptly
Anyway - I will try as soon as possible and post back with the results

Having used the NusaMap, OziExplorer, Nokia maps for Java I would tend to recommend the NusaMap for routes and finding places but as mentioned it need a Windows Mobile PDA. This is, I think, more practical and usable than a dedicated Garmin GPS.
I use OziExplorer extensively in my work but have found very few good Indonesia downloads. Not good at helping you to find your way around.
Nokia Map is okay for Jakarta, assuming you have a Nokia cell phone with GPS. For Nokias purchased outside Indonesia you may have tp download (purchase) the map from Nokia.

@pak Ian, I beg to differ. GPS software in PDA/Smartphone is 'jack of all trades' - it can do a lot of things w/ good results, but not excellent. I've used Garmin Nuvi (especially 6xx or 7xx series) or Mio PND, and I think I prefer PND/dedicated GPS unit for car navigation (or dedicated handheld GPS for serious trekking/hiking). They're much easier to use, faster to calculate, w/ much better screen backlight/quality than a normal PDA. Moreover, these dedicated units never 'hang' like PDA occasionally. ;-)
Have you try Trek's map for OziExplorer? I think his Jakarta map (based on Gunther map images) is excellent, and his other Indonesia maps (Semarang, Surabaya, Malang based on Periplus maps) are good enough to be use on daily basis. I would not hesitate to use his maps anyday for city walk (big THANKS to Trek for creating/sharing his maps).
As Ozi software is freeform/non-routing GPS software, it cannot be used to guide you from point A to B (for this purpose, use GMXT instead... . But it is very useful to pinpoint our exact position and look out for details surrounding.

hmm, in my point of view, I prefer using a dedicated garmin GPS for some reasons.
firstly is that using internal GPS on PDAs consume battery too fast which then will trouble me if the battery is low when I need to make some calls.
secondly is the screen colour of dedicated garmin GPS and other branded dedicated GPS device have more contrast and brightness so that it can be viewed better in the daylight (well depends on the screen u had on your PDA though)
thirdly, dedicated GPS seems to lock signal faster ( not sure but supposed to lol)
well I these are my opinions, everyone has their own. so, peace out and thanks
anyway, I'm bidding on Garmin nuvi 200 (second hand from ebay) wish me luck, if I won I'll be expecting for the new Indonesia navnet maps.
peace

That was most kind of you Pak Bambang, you've made me blushing I appreciate your kind words very much...
Sooner than promised, finally it's over, the last scanned map contribution from me. Please get it from MediaFire link aforementioned.
It's been really fun and gratifying experience to be able to digitize paper maps and sharing with you all. In all honesty, I'm aware that what I've done so far with the local maps is not entirely legit (the sharing part that is). I wish there is another way to share our cities' maps in more legitimate manner, but the lack of online sources availability for our country's map so far, has constrained my choices, thus the reason why I did what I did. I feel compel to say, and greatly hope, that if the you guys feel the maps help you, please consider buying the book if you have not already owned it, just to help and appreciate the publisher. As for me, I am more than happy if I can contribute little things that might be useful to the community, whether it's raster maps for java phones or just my daughter's voice for garmin. The thought that some people could still be using the stuff that I've made and find them useful for years to come, is rewarding enough. Credits and acknowledgements are really nice things to receive, but truly, they are not something that I would ever go after. That is another reason why I often prefer doing things anonymously
QmQ, good luck with gmxt. Must be a lot of things to digest if you just get into it. I hope that you find what you're looking for.

Glad you like it Pak Jack and you're welcome . Michelle is indeed the real name of my daughter, a fourth grader now (she was in the third grade while recording that). We live in a small town somehere near Surabaya, hence the dialect, although we are not javanese by race. I know a few words were translated incorrectly, because I just read them from a list and asked her to speak in Indonesian, without knowing the full context of that word(s) in a sentence. The most glaring mistake must be the word "board" (023) which was translated as "papan", when it should be "naik" as in "board ferry". Never got the chance to revise it, as she is really an impatient little girl . I had to drag her feet to speak in front of the mic, showered her with promises, during which all she kept saying was "Are we done yet? Are we done yet?" "You've said it's going to be only ten more words, how come we haven't finished yet after the thirdtieth?" Mind you, just to get a word right, many samples were needed as she had a bit of runny nose at that time. I should tell her that uncle Jack on the internet loves her voice. That should make her very happy indeed, and I should thank you for that

Yes..please tell her that uncle Jack would love to hear more her beautiful and cute voices, we are all here appreciate it and she should get chocolates or even ice creams for it, as she is sure well by now and doesn't have a runny nose.
I am myself never able to finish my Garmin Text Transalate files as it just goes by 75% at this mo. :o

A nice endeavor Pak Jack, please keep up the good work
Another kind uncle, I sure will, and thank you for letting my daughter guides your trip Pak Marvyn But perhaps enough about her already. Just imagining that she is telling uncles and aunties everywhere about where to go gives me a serious headache Let's now wait for what QmQ has to say, just in case he needs further assistance.

@Pak Trek: thanks a lot for the Bandung map, pak. Have downloaded it and I think the scan quality is excellent. Will obviously try it on my next visit to Bandung.
Now as you mention that the Garmin Bahasa Indonesia voice was your daughter's (I believe that was the 1st. Bahasa Indonesia voice for Garmin GPS!) - I think I know who you are... ;-)
@pak Mbon: congrats for winning the bid, and enjoy your Nuvi 200!

You are welcome Pak Bambang.
I'm afraid you're not correct on your conjecture I know about the first one, a substitute for british english voice file that was made by Pak Saftari that is intended for garmin gps units. Mine is the second one, a replacement for american english voice file that can be used with gmxt/pc. It was Pak Saftari's daughter voice file that had inspired me to do the same for xt

@pak bsuroyo: wah how do you know that I won the bid on nuvi 200? is it from another thread I've posted yesterday? thanks! I enjoyed it a lot.
anyway, can we download satellite information and upload it to our nuvi 200 to reduce the time to first fix (TTFF)? I've compared my Dopod D810 internal gps chipset (i believe it was quallcom?) and nuvi 200 chipset (sirfstar III?) yesterday. and surprisingly enough, my Dopod D810 was able to win the TTFF by around 30 seconds

Me again
I'm afraid I must disappear for a week or so. But later I will (I hope) have time to play with GMXT.
For now I have installed OziCE with a map of Semarang. It looks fine - I only have small problems with the filenames - don't seem to get the idea of how a certain map area is named But I'll get it eventually
Thanks for all your help paks

@pak Mbon: I've notice that you raised several Nuvi 200 related questions in the forum, thus I've (safely) presumed that you got your Nuvi 200 already... ;-)
@pak QmQ: do not hesitate to ask if you have further queries. And if possible, pls give feedback on your trip as well (whether the map is detail enough, etc.)

@pak bsuroyo: yes I've got my own nuvi 200 (Finally yayyy!! ^^) I'm so happy with it, but again I got some problem with it, such as playback on saved tracklog. that's why I posted several threads.. I'm sorry if I have flooded the forum, I was just curious and I hope that others will find it useful if someone has the answer of the question =)
thankyou and sorry pak bsuroyo
